New Overlanding SUV, the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline
Ford has unveiled its new trim levels for their redesigned 2022 Expedition and let’s just say I am in love with them. Ford has always had a foot in the door for Overlanding and off-roading and their new Timberline trim is super exciting and shows they are still thinking about us outdoor enthusiasts going into the future.
The Timberline is the new off-road trim level for the Expedition and replaces the existing FX4 Off-Road Package, but adds some super cool and unique styling as well as some awesome new features. Here are some of the features that stand out to us.
Ground Clearance
The new Timberline trim features an awesome 10.6in of ground clearance which is a bit more than other competing SUVs. To help with the ground clearance, Ford has equipped the Timberline trim with 32in Goodyear Wrangler A/T tires on 18in gloss black aluminum wheels with timberline laser engraved to add some unique styling. If you ever were to run out of ground clearance, they have also provided some heavy-duty underbody protection and skid plates that took inspiration from their F-150 Raptor.
If you choose to change out the tires, check out our favorite A/T Tires for Overlanding.
3.5-liter Ecoboost V6
Like most manufacturers, Ford has chosen to go with their V6 motor for their 2022 model but equipped it with their Ecoboost technology to bring the full-size SUV to a well-rounded 440 horsepower and 510lb-ft of torque. With this performance, Overlanding and off-roading will be super easy as well as offer some on-road performance for their adrenaline junkies.
Trail Control Technology
Featured in the 2021 Ford Bronco, the Timberline trim on the Expedition also now offers Trail Control technology which adds some awesome off-road performance and capability. With this driver-controlled technology, at the push of a button, you can let the vehicle do the work while you focus on steering to make Overlanding super easy if you find yourself in a more stressful situation.
Infotainment Options
Ford gives the option of their SYNC 4 12in center screen or their SYNC 4A high-definition 15.5in Tablet Style Display.
The 12in center screen allows the driver to split the screen to see multiple sources of information at ease to monitor your vehicle’s performance as well as show navigation routes so you don’t have to worry about switching through different screens to find what you need.
The 15.5in Tablet Display is a high-definition screen that integrates the Ford adaptive dash card technology that enables the driver to interact with digital cards instead of flipping through menus.
Driver Assistance Upgrades
Adaptive Cruise Control
The adaptive cruise control adapts to traffic around you even in stop-and-go situations where it matches the vehicles in front of you so all you have to worry about is the steering which makes longer adventures and road trips so much more comfortable. Although this feature is becoming standard in newer model vehicles, Ford has stepped it up to include lane-centering technology to help you stop drifting into another lane as well as ACC stop and go which stops your vehicle if the driver in front of you stops and then resumes to your set speed. You also have speed limit sign recognition which can set your vehicle to recognize speed limit signs and adjust your speed accordingly.
Active Park Assist 2.0
The Active Park Assist 2.0 recognizes potential parking spots and then once you shift into neutral and activate the park assist, you can let your vehicle do the parking for you, even for parallel parking spots.
Intersection Assist
When crossing a busy intersection, the new Expedition provides Intersection Assist which uses the front camera to monitor oncoming traffic and as a result, it sees a collision before it happens and it will apply your breaks to keep you and your passengers safe.
