Side Steps
Side steps are one of the options to help protect your vehicle from rough terrain. You will tell a side step by looking at them because they quite literally have steps on them to aid you in getting into your vehicle. As far as protection goes, they are usually pretty durable but can cause issues if you are doing rock crawling as the steps can catch on the rocks. If this happens, it can run the risk of damaging your vehicle but most likely will just damage the steps or rip them off. Side steps are perfect for individuals that want something that adds a little protection but mainly just want to make getting into their vehicle a little easier. I would consider side steps the middle ground between rock sliders and running boards as they serve the purpose of both of them, but not as great as picking one or the other. From my personal experience with my side steps, I like how they look but do wish they provided a little bit more protection. Also, make sure to watch your shins because you will definitely hit them quite a bit.
Rock Sliders
If you want maximum protection for your Overlanding vehicle, rock sliders are the way to go. Rock sliders are usually pretty simple and feature some type of bar that goes alongside the door panels and middle of your vehicle. They are specifically made for “sliding over rocks”, hence their name, and offer the most protection compared to side steps and running boards. One problem you might have with running boards. If you have a Toyota, I recommend also checking out Cali Raised LED’s selection of rock sliders.
With many rock slider options, some of them also offer a “kick-out”. The difference between a rock slider with the kick-out option is that having a kick-out gives extra protection to your rear end or bed (if you have a truck) from things smashing into them if you are traveling through tight and narrow spaces.
Running Boards
Running boards also offer a little bit more protection over having nothing at all but their main purpose is to assist you with getting into your vehicle. They are usually oval-shaped tubing or flat step that extends along with the cab of your vehicle. If you just want something for looks or if you have a taller vehicle, running boards are a great accessory. If you are needing more protection, I would recommend side steps or rock sliders though.
